Scared of the dentist? You're not alone.
Many -too many- people avoid the dentist, terrified by the idea of sitting
on the dental chair with bright lights pointing at them while a doctor
has his hands in their mouths.
But the consequences of this phobia can be serious.
Health professionals recommend that we visit a dentist for a dental checkup
and scale and clean every 6 to 12 months. These regular checkups and
cleans are a vital preventative measure that can actually save us from those
dreaded invasive treatments and expensive bills. How?
During your annual or 6 monthly checkup and clean, the dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth for signs of decay and might even take some x-rays to look for decay that the eye cannot see. If the dentist finds
any sign of early decay, he may be able to put in place a preventative plan that may stop the problem (or even reverse it) before it gets too bad. Keeping on top of those regular visits will not only help you save money in the long run, but may even save you from more intense procedures.
The problem is that many who suffer from a phobia of the dentist have already avoided visiting a dental practice for many years, and they notice now that their teeth are starting to hurt. Rest assured: at Alfredton Dental, it's our goal to make you feel as calm as possible during your visit. If you let us know that you have a phobia of the dentist, we'll adapt the visit to make it a positive experience. In fact we're so dedicated to help phobic patients that we do all we can, going above and beyond for the fear to stay at the door when you come to visit us. How?
On your first visit, our dentist will calmly take the time to explain everything that will take place during the appointment to provide you with reassurance and confidence. He'll patiently answer all your question and take into consideration any of your concerns. He will then arrange with you a treatment plan and talk to you about how to approach the needed treatment to accommodate your phobia. This may include the use of happy gas (nitrous oxide) or other medications that could even be prescribed prior to the appointments. Everything will be in your control and you won't be forced into anything if you are not comfortable or don't feel ready.
The rooms of our dentists are designed to make you feel calm and stress free. We use weighted blankets to provide pressure therapy which helps to relax the body and make you feel calm and safe. Aroma therapy is also used to create the most tranquil environment possible, and some of our rooms are even decked out with indoor plants! You can request to have relaxing music played during the appointment. As we said, we go above and beyond to provide the best experience possible for any of our patients with a fear of the dentist.
We understand it's not easy and it demands a lot of courage to take the first step and call the dentist. But it's also the first step to a healthier mouth, self-care, and a future full of smiles!
Please give us a call if you want to talk about this with us. We look forward to meeting you and helping you on your oral health journey!
